Christian Laville in memoriam

We announce with great sorrow that our colleague Christian Laville passed away on October 15, 2023.

A few years ago, our colleague Mostafa Hassani Idrissi wrote a letter in support of the elevation of Christian Laville to the rank of Professor Emeritus at Laval University, where he had taught history didactics for several decades, and we give here this letter as a further tribute.

Hassani Idrissi underlines Laville’s innovative contributions, from the 1970s onwards, on textbooks and memory, on the definition of historical thought and its crucial role in the education of citizens. Hassani Idrissi evokes Laville’s pleas for the integration of theory and practice in the didactics of history, and his questioning of certain Piaget-style aberrations. Finally, the author recalls Laville’s mark on international colloquia, including those of the International Society for History Didactis, and his worldwide influence in this field.
